Somatic Therapy in Chicago

Trauma-Informed Somatic Therapy in Chicago

We offer somatic therapy in Chicago to help individuals reconnect with their bodies and heal from anxiety, trauma, and chronic stress.

Reconnect with Your Body

Somatic therapy is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on the mind-body connection, understanding how psychological issues manifest physically in the body. Somatic psychotherapy uses mindfulness, body awareness, breathing exercises, and body-based skills to guide the client.

How may somatic therapy be used in a therapy session?

    • Your therapist prompting you to tune into your body.
    • Experimenting with different body postures or movements to access and express underlying emotions.
    • Practicing breathwork, meditation, or guided imagery in session.
    • Integrating EMDR techniques into therapy sessions.
    • Utilizing grounding exercises to regulate the nervous system and address feelings of being overwhelmed.
    • Practicing gentle yoga poses to address specific concerns.
    • Exploring the sensations associated with specific emotions or memories.
    • Exploring the connection between physical symptoms (e.g., headaches, stomachaches) and underlying emotional states.

Online somatic therapy

At Embodied Wellness Center, our telehealth platform makes it easy for you to access transformative somatic therapy from the comfort of your own space. It helps to have a yoga mat, but a blanket or towel will also work. You may be asked to bring props to the session, which may include blocks, towels, blankets, or pillows. We will work with you based on your available resources.

In our most recent newsletter, we discuss the idea of subtraction. In today’s modern world, we deal with constant overconsumption and overstimulation. When we’re stressed or burnt out, we often think the solution lies in adding something, and while these may be well-intentioned efforts, sometimes what we truly need is to subtract: create space by doing less. So, what can you subtract from your week this week?

Practicing one mindfully is one of the simplest ways to feel calmer and more present. It’s the art of doing one thing at a time with your full attention. When your mind wants to jump ahead or multitask, gently bring yourself back to what you’re actually doing in that moment. Small, steady presence adds up.
